Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on fundamental technologies for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). This strategic partnership aims to advance intelligence and electrification efforts, accelerating the move towards a carbon-neutral and traffic-accident-free society.
Key Highlights:
- Joint Research Agreement: Focused on fundamental technologies for next-generation SDV platforms.
- Battery Cooperation: Commonizing battery specifications and potential mutual supply.
- e-Axles Standardization: Agreement to share motors and inverters for next-generation EVs.
- Vehicle Complementation: Supplementing each other’s models across regions.
- Energy Services Collaboration: Exploring energy services and resource circulation in Japan.
Nissan and Honda’s agreement, based on the MOU signed on March 15, covers broad discussions on strategic partnerships in the age of intelligence and electrification. Both companies are committed to R&D and investments to promote the evolution of EVs, particularly SDVs.
Joint Research Agreement on SDV Platform
Nissan and Honda will conduct joint research on fundamental technologies for next-generation SDVs, aiming to complete basic research within a year. This research will explore the feasibility of mass production development.
Battery Collaboration
The two companies will explore cooperation in battery technology, sharing specifications, and mutual supply. This collaboration aims to offer a wide range of battery options, from high-output to low-cost models, while reducing costs through diversified investments and risk hedging. The companies plan to commonize battery cell module specifications for EVs and study the supply of lithium-ion batteries from Honda’s joint venture, L-H Battery Company, Inc., to Nissan in North America after 2028.
e-Axles Standardization
Nissan and Honda have agreed to standardize e-Axle specifications for their next-generation EVs. The initial focus will be on sharing motors and inverters, core components of the e-Axle.
Vehicle Complementation
The companies will complement each other’s vehicle models globally, from short-term to long-term perspectives. They have reached a basic agreement on models and regions for mutual complementation and established a joint product review system.
Energy Services and Resource Circulation
Nissan and Honda will explore cooperation in energy services and resource circulation in Japan. This includes areas like charging, energy equipment, energy services using batteries, and charging services.
By leveraging each other’s strengths, Nissan and Honda aim to create new value through co-creation, accelerating their journey towards a sustainable and intelligent future.
