In the second half of fiscal 2024, MONET Technologies Inc., a joint venture involving SoftBank Corp., Toyota Motor Corporation, and other Japanese automotive manufacturers, will introduce an autonomous mobility service in Tokyo Waterfront City. This service will utilize Level 2 self-driving technology, where the vehicle manages most driving functions while a human operator remains on standby. The goal is to enhance the social acceptance of autonomous driving in Tokyo.

Key Highlights:

  • Launch Date: Fiscal 2024 (ending March 31, 2025)
  • Location: Ariake, Daiba, and Aomi areas of Tokyo Waterfront City
  • Vehicles: Two Toyota Sienna minivans equipped with Level 2 self-driving technology
  • Passenger Capacity: Each minivan can seat up to five passengers
  • Speed Limit: Maximum speed of 40 km/h (25 mph)
  • Reservation System: On-demand ride booking via the “MONET” app, with future plans to integrate other ride-hailing platforms
  • Cost: Initial rides will be available at no charge to the public
  • Expansion Plans: Increase the service area, number of vehicles, and develop remote vehicle monitoring capabilities

The service will start with two Toyota Sienna minivans operating in Tokyo’s designated autonomous driving districts. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has chosen these areas to foster public acceptance of autonomous vehicles. Initially, rides can be booked through the “MONET” app, and there will be no cost to passengers.

In addition to its immediate offerings, MONET Technologies aims to expand the service by increasing the number of vehicles and broadening its operating area. They also plan to allow ride bookings through other ride-hailing apps and implement a system to remotely monitor multiple autonomous vehicles. This is part of MONET’s broader strategy to promote the integration of autonomous driving services in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and related agencies.

By leveraging its collaboration with public and private sectors, MONET Technologies is set to shape the future of autonomous mobility in Japan, creating a more accessible and innovative transportation system for the urban landscape.
