Mobileye has decided to discontinue its internal development of next-generation frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) lidar technology. The decision follows significant advancements in other areas of the company’s technology roadmap, particularly in computer vision and imaging radar. This move will not impact any current customer product programs or product development and will result in future cost savings.
Key Highlights:
- Mobileye will halt FMCW lidar development for autonomous and highly automated driving systems.
- The decision stems from advancements in EyeQ6-based computer vision, internally developed imaging radar, and the cost reduction of third-party lidar units.
- Imaging radar remains a strategic priority for Mobileye’s internal sensor development.
- The lidar research and development unit will be wound down by the end of 2024, affecting approximately 100 employees.
- Operating expenses related to the lidar unit are expected to reach $60 million in 2024, but this decision will lead to future cost savings.
- Mobileye’s imaging radar technology is on track to enter production next year.
Despite the discontinuation of lidar development, Mobileye remains committed to driving advancements in autonomous driving and driver-assistance technologies, leveraging artificial intelligence, computer vision, and other innovations. Since its founding, the company has equipped 180 million vehicles worldwide with its technology and continues to lead the evolution of mobility.
