MAN Truck & Bus has become the first truck manufacturer to release a comprehensive dataset of sensor and driving data for autonomous vehicles. The “MAN TruckScenes” dataset includes 747 unique driving scenes and is freely available to developers, universities, and scientific institutions. This initiative fosters collaboration, accelerates development, and promotes the standardization of data formats in the autonomous driving sector.

Key Highlights:

  • Comprehensive Dataset: Includes data from four cameras, six lidars, six radars, two inertial measurement units (IMS), and a high-precision GNSS system.
  • Innovative Features: The first dataset to include 4D radar data with 360° coverage, providing the largest annotated radar data collection for autonomous trucks.
  • Broad Applications: Focuses on hub-to-hub transportation, covering German highways, feeder routes, and terminal environments.
  • Machine Learning Integration: Supports the development of neural networks for autonomous driving and environment recognition.

MAN TruckScenes: Pioneering Data for Autonomous Driving

Advancing Autonomous Hub-to-Hub Transportation

The MAN TruckScenes dataset provides a foundation for autonomous driving applications, especially in logistics. The dataset covers diverse driving scenarios, including weather variations, and features a training, test, and validation set for machine learning. The annotated data helps researchers evaluate and improve the performance of environment recognition systems, streamlining the path to safe and effective driverless truck operations.

Dr. Frederik Zohm, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at MAN Truck & Bus, stated, “Datensätze wie MAN TruckScenes stellen eine wichtige Ressource für die datengetriebene Entwicklung dar… Mit MAN TruckScenes gehen wir voran, um diese Lücke zu füllen.”

A Roadmap to Autonomous Trucking

MAN Truck & Bus is actively involved in pioneering research and development projects to advance autonomous truck technology:

  • Port of Hamburg Pilot (2018–2020): Tested a driverless truck for container handling in collaboration with Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG.
  • ANITA Project (2019–2023): Developed autonomous truck integration into container logistics with Deutsche Bahn and other partners.
  • ATLAS-L4 Project (Since 2022): Focused on developing autonomous highway transportation between logistics hubs, aligned with Germany’s 2021 autonomous driving law.

Looking ahead, MAN plans to conduct practical tests of autonomous trucks on highways in 2025, with series production expected by the end of the decade. The MAN TruckScenes dataset can be accessed at www.man.eu/truckscenes.

MAN’s commitment to innovation and collaboration underscores its leadership in the transition toward autonomous trucking solutions.
