Luminar, a top automotive technology company, has revealed that its LiDAR technology will be featured in the new, fully electric Volvo ES90, set to begin production in 2025. This marks the second Volvo model to use Luminar’s advanced safety systems, following the Volvo EX90 SUV, which is already reaching customers. The LiDAR technology enhances the ES90’s safety by providing precise environmental scanning, a key feature for advanced driver assistance systems, ensuring safer roads for everyone.
Key Highlights:
- LiDAR Precision: Luminar’s LiDAR uses laser pulses to measure distances accurately, helping the car detect objects in 3D, even in tough conditions like darkness.
- Safety Boost: It spots pedestrians up to 250 meters away and small objects like a tire on a dark road up to 120 meters ahead, improving night-time safety.
- Growing Partnership: This is the second collaboration between Luminar and Volvo, expanding their shared focus on automotive safety.
- Smart Integration: The LiDAR fits neatly into the ES90’s roofline, working with cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors for a full safety package.
Luminar (Nasdaq: LAZR) is bringing its cutting-edge LiDAR technology to the Volvo ES90, a premium electric vehicle launching this year. This follows the successful rollout of the Volvo EX90 SUV, which also uses Luminar’s tech and is now in customers’ hands. LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, uses laser light to map the car’s surroundings with high accuracy. This is a game-changer for safety, especially at night when accidents are more likely, as it doesn’t rely on visible light like traditional cameras.
The ES90’s LiDAR will team up with other sensors—radars, cameras, and ultrasonic systems—to give the car a detailed, real-time view of the road. This setup helps the vehicle spot and react to hazards, making driving safer for those inside and outside the car. Luminar’s CEO, Austin Russell, highlighted the importance of this step: “We’re proud to be selected in conjunction with industry leaders like NVIDIA for a second global automotive launch as Volvo Cars expands its new lineup. The Volvo ES90 will help scale our safety-critical technology at a time when consumers, automakers, and regulators alike are demanding the most advanced sensing capabilities in their roadmaps — and this is just the beginning.”
Volvo’s Head of Software Engineering, Alwin Bakkenes, added, “The Iris LiDAR on ES90 will complement an advanced set of sensors and enable exceptional perception to help keep everyone safe inside and around the car.” This collaboration builds on a strong partnership between Luminar and Volvo, both dedicated to pushing safety standards higher. The ES90 runs on Volvo’s latest SPA2 platform, the same foundation as the EX90, ensuring the LiDAR blends seamlessly into the vehicle’s design.
By adding this technology to the ES90, Volvo is redefining safety for premium electric cars. It’s exposing a new group of drivers to advanced features that could set the bar for the industry. As cars get smarter, partnerships like this one between Luminar and Volvo are key to creating vehicles that prioritize safety while embracing innovation.
