UK-based manufacturer JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) is taking steps to improve driver understanding of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) after a recent survey highlighted significant knowledge gaps. The survey revealed that many drivers are unaware of how ADAS works, with some drivers unclear about basic functions such as automatic braking and the importance of keeping sensors clean. In response, JLR has partnered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to update official guidelines and raise awareness about these critical safety features.

Key Highlights:

  • 41% of drivers are unclear about how their vehicle’s ADAS features, such as automatic braking, function.
  • Nearly 20% of drivers are unaware that dirt, ice, or obstructions can impair the effectiveness of ADAS technologies, including emergency braking and collision detection systems.
  • 36% of UK drivers have experienced ADAS sensors failing due to dirt or debris on their vehicles.
  • 20% of drivers do not plan to clean their cars more often, even though regular cleaning is essential for optimal sensor performance.
  • JLR is collaborating with the DVSA to improve ADAS education through updated driver handbooks and public guidance.

JLR’s initiative aims to bridge the knowledge gap surrounding ADAS technologies, which are increasingly becoming standard in modern vehicles. While ADAS systems like autonomous emergency braking and reversing collision detection significantly enhance road safety, they are not effective if drivers don’t understand their functionality or the importance of maintaining sensor cleanliness.

Survey Findings:
The JLR survey underscores the importance of educating drivers on the proper use and maintenance of ADAS. Some key statistics from the survey include:

  • 22% of drivers admit they do not clean their cars at least once a month, a critical step for ensuring sensor accuracy.
  • Next-generation JLR electric vehicles will incorporate AI-powered features and advanced safety systems, further emphasizing the importance of driver knowledge in ensuring these technologies function effectively.

JLR’s Executive Director of Product Engineering, Thomas Mueller, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating: “It is vital that drivers learn about the systems fitted to their cars and how to operate and maintain them so that they work most effectively.”

By increasing awareness and education about ADAS systems, JLR is aiming to improve overall road safety and ensure that drivers can fully utilize these advanced technologies.
