Key Highlights:

  • Partnership between Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Applied Intuition, Inc. focuses on developing autonomous trucking solutions.
  • The initiative aims to mitigate driver shortages in Japan’s commercial trucking industry.
  • Isuzu Motors Ltd.‘s “ISUZU Transformation – Growth to 2030 (IX)” plan includes autonomous driving as a key business pillar.

Truck driver shortages and overwork have become critical issues in Japan, with nearly 84% of drivers facing health problems due to long hours. The Japanese government recently revised its Labor Standards Law, capping annual work hours, which has heightened concerns about driver shortages. The industry anticipates a 36% decline in drivers by 2030, a situation referred to as “The 2024 Problem,” which threatens to disrupt supply chains and challenge Japan’s reputation for service excellence.

To combat these challenges, Isuzu Motors Ltd. announced its mid-term management plan, “ISUZU Transformation – Growth to 2030 (IX),” aiming to establish autonomous driving as a new business pillar. Applied Intuition’s technology is central to this effort, enabling Isuzu to develop safe, intelligent systems for the commercial trucking sector.

Qasar Younis, co-founder and CEO of Applied Intuition, emphasized the company’s commitment to customer success: “Applied Intuition is in the business of enabling our OEM customers to deploy next-generation technology in their vehicles. In this case, we’re advancing commercial trucking autonomy with Isuzu.”

Shinsuke Minami, president and COO of Isuzu Motors Ltd., highlighted the importance of the partnership: “This strategic partnership will serve as a strong driving force for our goal to create and offer solutions to challenges faced by our customers and society as a whole.”

Applied Intuition and Isuzu Motors Ltd. are set to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of autonomous commercial trucking, addressing significant challenges in the industry and contributing to Japan’s economic and social stability.
