Expanding Autonomous Capabilities
Hyundai Motor Company and Waymo’s strategic partnership focuses on incorporating Waymo’s fully autonomous technology into Hyundai’s all-electric IONIQ 5 SUV, which will eventually join the Waymo One autonomous ride-hailing fleet. The IONIQ 5 vehicles for this partnership will be assembled at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia and will be equipped with Waymo’s sixth-generation Waymo Driver technology. Hyundai and Waymo plan to produce these vehicles in significant volumes over multiple years to support the expanding scale of the Waymo One fleet.
The initial on-road testing of these Waymo-enabled IONIQ 5s is set to begin by late 2025, with plans for deployment to Waymo One riders in subsequent years. This collaboration highlights the alignment between Hyundai’s vision of sustainable, convenient mobility and Waymo’s mission to make autonomous driving accessible and trusted.
Partnership to Scale Autonomous Services
According to Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo, “We are thrilled to partner with Hyundai as we further our mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. Hyundai’s focus on sustainability and strong electric vehicle roadmap makes them a great partner for us as we bring our fully autonomous service to more riders in more places.”
José Muñoz, President and Global COO of Hyundai Motor Company, also shared, “Hyundai and Waymo share a vision to improve the safety, efficiency, and convenience of how people move. Waymo’s transformational technology is improving road safety where they operate, and the IONIQ 5 is the ideal vehicle to scale this further.” He emphasized that this partnership is only the first step, and both companies are exploring further opportunities for collaboration.
Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division, added, “We recently announced the launch of Hyundai Motor Company’s autonomous vehicle foundry business to provide global autonomous driving companies with vehicles capable of implementing SAE Level 4 or higher autonomous driving technology. There is no better partner for our first agreement in this initiative than industry-leader Waymo.”
Autonomous-Ready Features
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 for Waymo will feature modifications like redundant hardware and power doors to support autonomous functionality. Known for its 800-volt architecture, the IONIQ 5 allows long driving shifts on a single charge and minimizes downtime with fast charging capabilities. Its spacious interior provides ample legroom, headroom, and cargo space, enhancing the rider experience.
