General Motors (GM) has appointed Sterling Anderson, a co-founder of autonomous trucking company Aurora, as its new executive vice president of global product and chief product officer. Anderson will oversee the development of GM’s vehicles, including both gas-powered and electric models. His focus will be on integrating hardware and software to improve the customer experience, a critical move as the automotive industry shifts toward technology-driven solutions.

Anderson will report to GM President Mark Reuss and work from GM’s Mountain View Tech Center in California, starting June 2. His role is pivotal as the industry evolves, with greater emphasis on electric vehicles and software innovation. Reuss noted, “Our customers are expecting more from our vehicles than ever before. We have an opportunity to evolve the way we build from the ground up.”
GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra praised Anderson’s expertise, saying, “Sterling joins GM at a critical time as our industry continues to reinvent itself. He brings decades of leadership in automotive engineering, tech start-ups, and software innovation.” Anderson’s experience includes co-founding Aurora, where he launched a driverless trucking service in Texas, and working at Tesla, leading the Model X and Autopilot programs. He also holds a Ph.D. in robotics from MIT.
Anderson is excited about the role, stating, “GM has a deep heritage, bold vision, and the technical foundation to create products that millions of people love.” His appointment signals GM’s commitment to advancing vehicle technology.
