Continental Hits 200 Million Radar Milestone

Continental, a leading technology company, has reached a significant milestone by producing its 200 millionth radar sensor. This achievement highlights the company’s critical role in advancing vehicle safety and autonomous driving technologies over the past 25 years.

Key Highlights

  • Produced 200 million radar sensors, doubling output in just four years.
  • Secured orders worth €1.5 billion in Q1 2025 for radar sensors.
  • Radar sensors are vital for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving.
  • Technology evolved from bulky systems to compact, efficient sensors.
  • Applications span passenger cars, trucks, and two-wheelers.

Radar sensors are essential in modern vehicles, powering features like adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, and blind spot detection. They deliver precise data about a vehicle’s surroundings, laying the groundwork for autonomous driving. Continental’s extensive portfolio meets diverse needs across the automotive industry.

The company’s radar journey began in 1999 with the first long-range radar in the Mercedes S-Class. That initial system, weighing 1.3 kilograms and the size of a shoebox, contrasts sharply with today’s compact sensors—now as small as two matchboxes with ranges up to 300 meters. Norbert Hammerschmidt, head of Components Business in Continental’s Autonomous Mobility unit, noted, “Smart radar sensors, for example, are already equipped with powerful microchips, which directly process the signals received from the sensor and—usually in combination with data from other sensor systems such as cameras—make it available in real time.”

Continental’s use of artificial intelligence has further refined these systems, supporting applications from luxury cars to mass-market models. The 200 million milestone reflects rising demand for safety features, while €1.5 billion in recent orders, set for production in 2026 and 2027, signals strong industry trust. Ismail Dagli, head of Autonomous Mobility, stated, “The mark of 200 million sensors produced—and the major series orders—emphasize that Continental stands for high-tech engineering, pioneering spirit, and customized technology solutions for every application in the automotive market.”

Looking ahead, innovations like the 4D long-range imaging radar promise to enhance fully autonomous systems, solidifying Continental’s leadership in shaping safe, efficient mobility.
