BMW has become the world’s first car manufacturer to receive approval for integrating both a Level 2 driving assistance system (BMW Highway Assistant) and a Level 3 system (BMW Personal Pilot L3) within the same vehicle. This breakthrough, featured in the new BMW 7 Series, offers drivers the unique advantage of combining these advanced systems for enhanced driving comfort and safety.

Key Highlights

  • BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2): Enhances comfort on long journeys with automated lane changes and hands-free driving.
  • BMW Personal Pilot L3 (Level 3): Allows drivers to engage in other activities during traffic jams with highly automated driving.

BMW Highway Assistant: Comfort on Long Journeys

The BMW Highway Assistant, a Level 2 feature, significantly enhances comfort on long-distance drives by operating at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). It allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on motorways with structurally separated carriageways, provided they remain attentive and ready to retake control when needed. This system includes the Active Lane Change Assistant, enabling the vehicle to change lanes autonomously and adjust speed for overtaking maneuvers.

BMW Personal Pilot L3: New In-Car Activities

The highly automated BMW Personal Pilot L3 system takes driving to the next level by enabling drivers to temporarily divert their attention away from the road. At speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), this Level 3 system allows for hands-free driving in specific conditions, such as traffic jams on motorways. Drivers can engage in other in-car activities like phone calls, reading, and streaming videos, though they must be ready to retake control when prompted by the vehicle.

Innovative Driving Experience

The combination of these advanced driving assistance systems in the BMW 7 Series represents a significant leap in automotive technology, offering a more comfortable and relaxing driving experience. “We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in the new BMW 7 Series,” says Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience BMW Group. “In the process, we are underlining our commitment to offering our customers a safe, comfortable, and innovative driving experience.”

Availability and Pricing

The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are part of the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3, available exclusively in Germany for €6,000 (including VAT). Drivers with previously delivered vehicles equipped with the BMW Personal Pilot L3 will receive the BMW Highway Assistant feature free of charge starting August 24.

By integrating both Level 2 and Level 3 systems, BMW is paving the way for a future of autonomous driving, setting a benchmark in the automotive industry.
