Baidu Chooses Hesai for Robotaxi Lidar

Hesai Technology, a leader in lidar safety technology, has been selected by Baidu, Inc. as the exclusive provider of long-range lidar for Baidu’s next-generation robotaxi platform, Yichi 06. Baidu, a major internet tech company and one of the largest robotaxi service providers globally, plans to deploy 100,000 robotaxis in China, making this the first widespread application of robotaxis in the country. This deal is estimated to be worth $200-300 million.

Key Highlights:

  • Baidu’s plans: Deployment of 100,000 robotaxi vehicles in China.
  • Market forecast: Chinese robotaxi market expected to reach $162.6 billion by 2025 and $403.6 billion by 2030.
  • Lidar demand: Growth driven by the need for better sensor performance, safety, and perception in autonomous vehicles.
  • Current usage: Baidu’s Apollo Go 5th generation robotaxis already use Hesai’s Pandar series lidar.
  • Cost reduction: Sixth-generation Apollo Go autonomous vehicles are 60% cheaper than the previous generation, priced around $28,500.
  • Market share: Hesai dominated the global robotaxi lidar market in 2023 with a 74% share.
  • Top clients: Nine out of the top ten L4 autonomous driving companies, including Zoox, NVIDIA, and Nuro, use Hesai’s lidar.
  • Shipment volume: Over 380,000 lidar units shipped as of the first quarter of this year.

“The autonomous driving industry has rapidly evolved in recent years and today’s surge of autonomous driving in China is a testament to the breakthroughs we’ve made in smart driving,” said David Li, CEO & Co-Founder of Hesai. “Advanced sensors like lidar are accelerating the adoption of autonomous driving.”
