Portocel has taken a groundbreaking step in port logistics by officially integrating an autonomous truck into its operations. Developed in partnership with Lume Robotics and VIX Logística, the self-driving vehicle has been rigorously tested for over a year at the Aracruz, Espírito Santo terminal. This innovation positions Portocel as the first port in Brazil to incorporate autonomous technology into its workflow, setting a new industry standard.
Key Highlights:
- First-of-its-kind in Brazil – Portocel is pioneering autonomous vehicle deployment in the port sector.
- Developed in partnership – A collaboration between Portocel, Lume Robotics, and VIX Logística.
- Advanced technology – The truck utilizes AI-driven sensors, computer vision, mapping, and real-time decision-making.
- Proven reliability – During a 12-month testing period, it covered 4,500 km and logged 400+ hours of operation.
- Future expansion – A second autonomous truck is already in the assisted operation phase.
Transforming Port Logistics with Automation
The autonomous truck marks a major shift in efficiency and safety. It is fully controlled by an AI-driven system with interconnected cameras and sensors to ensure rapid responses to obstacles. With a reaction time of just one-tenth of a second, it significantly outperforms human operators in emergency scenarios.
According to Alexandre Billot Mori, Executive Manager at Portocel, this initiative underscores Portocel’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence. Rânik Guidolini, Executive Director of Lume Robotics, highlighted that this is the first autonomous truck operating in a port environment in the Southern Hemisphere, solidifying Brazil’s role in the global autonomous technology race.
A Milestone for the Industry
Elias Alves, Director at VIX Logística, sees 2025 as the year of autonomous vehicles, emphasizing that automation is rapidly transforming various industries, including the port sector. The successful deployment at Portocel’s cellulose transport operations sets a precedent for wider adoption.
With Portocel’s continuous push for innovation, the integration of autonomous technology reflects a vision to redefine port logistics and enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the long run.
