Scania and Fortescue have partnered to create a fully integrated autonomous road train solution aimed at revolutionizing mining operations. This collaboration combines Scania’s expertise in truck automation and Fortescue’s knowledge in fleet management to deliver a sustainable, efficient, and carbon-reducing solution. The project, which will be tested at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine, involves the development of a 240-ton payload road train utilizing autonomous driving technology and advanced fleet management systems.

Key Highlights:

  • Collaboration: Scania and Fortescue are co-developing an autonomous road train solution for the mining industry.
  • Sustainability: The technology will focus on optimizing fuel and energy consumption to lower carbon emissions.
  • Technological Integration: Scania’s onboard automation hardware will be integrated with Fortescue’s Fleet Management System for enhanced efficiency.
  • Mining Efficiency: The road train features a Scania R770 prime mover platform and three trailers capable of hauling 120 tonnes, with a total payload of 240 tonnes.

The global mining industry is rapidly evolving, with a focus on sustainability and autonomous solutions. Scania’s extensive experience in the mining sector, combined with Fortescue’s innovation in autonomous haulage, positions this project as a forward-thinking initiative. The solution will be tested and validated at Fortescue’s iron ore operations in Christmas Creek, Queensland, a site known for its harsh environmental conditions, ideal for pushing the limits of autonomy.

According to Manfred Streit, Managing Director at Scania Australia, “The Road Train solution will reduce the overall mining footprint,” emphasizing the environmental benefits of this collaboration. The integration of autonomous driving with Fortescue’s Fleet Management System is set to maximize productivity, reduce costs, and increase operational efficiency, crucial for the sustainable future of mining.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to safety, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility, aligning with both companies’ goals of reducing carbon footprints while improving performance in demanding mining environments.

By joining forces, Scania and Fortescue are at the forefront of autonomous mining solutions, setting new benchmarks for the industry.
